Mrs. Brown

  • Welcome to a brand new school year!  My name is Beth Brown and I will be your child's teacher this year.  I look forward to a busy and exciting year in Room 5, at Hermon-DeKalb, and am eager to work with you and your child (a.k.a. a Smartie) to make first grade a wonderful place to be.

I thought you might like to know a little about me, as I will be guiding your child's journey through first grade.  I grew up in Connecticut and travel there quite often to visit my family.  I married an amazing Canadian man and have FOUR adventurous little boys.  I earned my elementary education degree from St. Bonaventure University and my master's degree in education from SUNY Potsdam.  I taught 2 years in a private school in New Rochelle, New York prior to teaching at Hermon-DeKalb.  I will be starting my 18th year at Hermon-Dekalb Central School.
I have 3 goals for my Smarties this year.  They are:
    • for my classroom to be a place of safety and security, by always encouraging risk-taking, as well as tolerance and RESPECT for each other.
    • for my Smarties to learn and reach his/her highest academic potential.
    • for my Smarties to grow in self-confidence & self-esteem.
In order for my Smarties to reach these goals, we will need to work together as a TEAM.  So, comminucation between HOME & SCHOOL is essential.  Every Friday your Smartie will bring home their Friday Folder.  Inside will be:  a letter to let you know what went on in Room 5, as well as any important events, their Behavior Calendar to be sent home 1st day of school explaining), permission slips, if need be, & their work from the week(i.e. spelling tests, reading tests, & math tests) .  Please look at your child's work, praise them when appropriate, and review concepts when necessary.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to send a note to school with your Smartie or call the school @347-3442.
I look forward to sharing this year with you & your Smartie!
